One of the most perplexing engineering problems that had to be solved was getting the crankshaft to revolve one way while the flywheel revolved the other. It wasn't until a special velocity reversing joint was developed, that the engine would run properly.

(Actually it's called aliasing... a result of animation... just like the old western movies with the stagecoach racing down the road with its wheels slowly revolving backwards... I came out of childhood very confused by that...)
